The United Nations enacted international albinism awareness day on June 13th in 2015. The origin comes from the incident a Canadian boy named Peter Ash who had congenital leukopathia (albinism) got terrible bullied because of his white hair and skin ,and weak eyesight 40 years ago.
He survived horrific days of scorn and bullying that had distressed him for long time. He knew the fact that there were many children who unfortunately chose the way to commit suicide because of terrible prejudice from people.
In the south of Sahara, Albino is believed in one of spirits called "zeruzeru" meaning "nil" which has been regarded as imbecility and evil spirit. Some people worshiped albinos such as who are more transcendent existance than human and the other people despise albinos as less than human.
There are also dubious shaman who covet albino's body to make a secret medicine bringing good fortune like victory of election,fertility and wealth. According to International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Albino's arms priced at 4000 dollars, whole body ( the limbs, sexual organs, ears, tongue, nose) priced at over 75000 dollars.
In the first Ash's visit to Africa, he met bereaved family who lost a 6-year-old girl who were killed in a way of slitting her throat, amputating both arms and legs and cutting off her tongue in Tanzania. He took it into his head to fulfill his mission for albinos then. After that, Ash changed his career of real estate investor into enlightenment activist and made effort to appeal to the United Nations to enact the international albinism awareness day.
Even though the parents' hair and skin is ordinary, if their children has a albinic recessive gene, the probability that children is born as albino is going to be very high. Albinos' eyesight is very week and they always run a risk of developing skin cancer but their intelligence and ability aren't inferior to ordinary people's one.
According to NGO "Under the Same Sun" that Ash established, at least 378 albinos were killed or cut off their both arms and legs for the last 15 years in the south of Sahara (two in three are kids ). About a half of 378 ill-treatments and massacres are happened in Tanzania.
Ash said " Massacres targeting at Albino are increased in each season of election." In this monthTanzanian authority alarmed politician not to rely on shaman . Incidents of rape by men who believe superstition that if having sexual relations with albino women they can completely recover from AIDS were frequently carried out.
With the great concern of brutality to Albinos, In 2008,Tanzanian government made a decision to start Albinos' school education at 9 educational institutions which originally accepted the entrance of children with visual and hearing disabilities.
Such schools specialized in Albinos are overcrowded and not good for them. Under the same sun supports the activity that Albino children can be allowed to go to 320 private schools which have teachers who show their understanding to albinism from kindergarten to universities or colleges. Ash's objective is to play a role to change people's viewpoint to Albino and make albinos become personnel that can work around the world.
