Volcanic activity in Mt.Hakoneyama in Japan


Tense dangerous circumstance continues around Owaku-dani by volcanic activity in Hakone-yama. Japanese Meteorological Agency announced that they would raise volcanic alert level from phase 1 (no eroption )to phase 2(keep out around crater) for the reason of the posibility of occurrence of small eruption around Owaku-dani on 6 evening.

Hakone-yama is caldera volcano, which locate in Western part of Kanagawa Prefecture where borders on Shizuoka Prefecutre. Inside of Caldera, several central cones are formed in Komagatake, Futagoyama and the highest peak of Kamiyama(1438m). There is still a number of fumarolic fields in such as Owakudani, Sounzan, Yunohanazawa.

There is no historical recode of eruption in Hakoneyama but geological research tells us Mt. Kanmuritake were formed on the north side of Mt. Kamiyama by the very last Magmatic explosion which happened around 3200 years ago and collapse of volcanic edifice dammed up Hayakawa River, which happened to be formed Ashinoko lake. After that, phreatic eruptions spewed about 3000 and 2000 years ago, and from the latter half of 12 cetury to 13 century continuously.
